The first production-model scooter came out in 1894, and was introduced by the German firm of Hildebrand & Wolfmuller. They introduced a water-cooled scooter, with transverse pistons providing direct rear-wheel drive and with the fuel tank mounted on the cross-frame. Top speed was 25mph- not only was this the first production scooter, but the first production motorcycle of any sort! (previous 'bikes had been 'one-offs' built by individual engineers, and not produced en masse for public purchase). An attractive little 'bike, it proved to be very popular, and several hundred were built.
