What is he firing order on a 1982 Honda cb900 custom?

As your sitting on the bike, the cylinders left to right are 1,2,3, and 4 the coil on the left side controls the No. 1 and 4 cylinders and the coil on the right controls the No. 2 and 3 cylinders so if you look down at both coils at the same time when they are installed left to right you will see the wires go as follows, 1,4,2,3

1982 Honda cb900 custom and it backfires when you let of on the throttle what causes this?

I have the same bike, same year. First I'd say, is it really backfiring (small explosions in the tailpipes) or more "popping" when you let off the gas? I think backfires might be more common on giving an engine gas, not letting up... Mine was popping (which I originally referred to as 'backfiring', as well), and the diagnoses was that the engine was running lean, and when I had the carbs cleaned, it went away completely.

Why is there a large ballast weight mounted to your 1982 Honda CB900 custom where the head light would be if it didn't have a fairing?

The weight takes the place of the headlight and assorted parts that are removed when a fairing is installed. It prevents a severe front end shake/wobble that occurs at relatively slow speeds that can be disastrous. I found this out by taking my hands off the bars as I have done many times on other bikes. After finding out about the weight's purpose I checked it out and mine was missing. I have since found one and will install it. It goes to the front of the wire harness box. This front end weight is needed for stability of the forks.
