there are two plugs on the oil pan. the one that is in the vertical position is the trans oil plug, the one that is in the horizontal position is the oil plug.
The tranny takes 80W90 gear lube
About 3 quarts. When you drain the oil & remove the filter, be sure to jack the back of the bike a bit to drain all the oil. When replacing the filter, pre-fill the new filter prior to installing. Then, after you have reinstalled the drain plug and lowered the jack (be sure the bike is on a level surface) add about 2.5 quarts and run the engine until warm. Recheck the oil level per service manual instructions and add oil as needed.

right hand sidecover, pull saddlebag, remove Allen bolt at bottom of sidecover and dipstick at top, pull sidecover. at bottom of oil tank you will see a sending unit with a single wire to it for the oil temp gauge. that is where the oil is drained. on the flht standard there is a regular oil drain plug in its place. when you replace the sender, do not apply excessive torque or you will break it. also use a folded piece of cardboard to direct oil away from frame or it will get all over the battery tray, exhaust and under trans.
