If it is a Briggs engine you will see the plug at the base of the oil filler tube pointing to the right side of the tractor. If it is a Kohler engine the plug is on the left side just in front of the oil filter.

Setting in the seat of the lawn tractor, it is on the front and right side of the motor close to the hinge area for the hood of the lawn tractor. You will see a black wire about the diameter of a pencil that slips over the plug. _____ |_____|\ o\ < - it will be angled (where the o is) from the front and the side of the motor.
A CJ8 Champion plug can be used with a 1974 lawn tractor that uses unleaded gas, however, it would be better to go with a hotter plug. The hotter plugs will keep the tractor running longer without needing to replace the plug sooner than expected.
A dirty spark plug can cause your lawn tractor engine to run at high RPM. A bad fuel filter can also cause this.

Mine was doing the same thing, and it turned out one of the plugs was not firing, which turned to be not the plug but the coil for that side (Briggs & Stratton 18hp on an MTD 1650 lawn tractor)
