Chaps are used as a form of protection. They will keep the cold wind off of the riders legs in the winter. Legs are hard to keep warm on a motorcycle because they are generally exposed to the wind and in the sitting position the pants are tight up against the skin. They keep road grime off of your pants legs and also bugs. Nobody wants to get where they are going and have nasty pants. Heavy chaps are an added protection should the rider go down. They offer really great road rash protection. People may think that bikers wear leather to look cool but it is mostly for protection. Yea it looks cool too.
El chaps = the chaps (chaps is not a spanish word)
Motorcycle chaps are used to provide protection to the legs of a rider. They protect against the cold and wind as well as general protection in the event of a fall or accident.

CHAPS was created in 1984.
half chaps do up at the side, gaiters do up at the back. Gaiters are normally leather, Chaps are sometimes leather, sometimes other materials, such as suade. Gaiters are used to create the effect of the traditional long boots, but only if matched in colour to your jodpur boots. Chaps are normally just used for everyday riding, to protect your legs.
