The two most common problems that would cause this would be:
1) The carburetor has gotten dirty, gummed up of something stuck inside that is causing it to starve for gas.
2) The coil/magneto is breaking down and losing spark.
To figure out which of these things it is you will need to find out if it is not getting gas or not getting spark when it dies.
Another possible problem is that the fuel solenoid may have gone out. There is an easy way to check for this problem. The fuel solenoid is located at the bottom of the carb bowl. Turn the key to "on" and listen for a single "click" coming from the carb area. If you do not hear a click, your fuel solenoid needs to be replaced. Price is about $50 from Sears.

For a Briggs & Stratton Intek engine "PH8170"
I just changed the oil and I couldn't find a filter on it.
The Fram Filters cross reference guide does not list B&S 690964.
Your Craftsman lawn mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine may not be staying running due to issues such as a clogged carburetor, dirty air filter, old fuel, or a faulty spark plug. It is recommended to check and address these potential problems to help your lawn mower run smoothly.
The 15.5 Briggs does not have an oil filter.
The Craftsman YTS riding lawn mower typically requires a standard spin-on oil filter, often compatible with the Briggs & Stratton or Kohler engines depending on the specific model. It's essential to check the owner's manual for the exact part number or specifications for the correct filter. Commonly used filters include the Briggs & Stratton 696854 or similar models, but confirming with your mower's details is recommended. Always ensure to replace the filter during routine maintenance for optimal engine performance.
A Briggs and Stratton 18 HP V-Twin engine has an oil capacity of 1.75 quarts when the oil filter is also changed. If the oil filter is left on, it will require 1.5 quarts.
What is the cross reference for Craftsman 24606 oil filter to Fram
Yes, but I do not recommend Fram filters as they are inferior in quality. Purchased a Purolator filter that will replace your Briggs filter. Any auto parts store that sells Purolator filters can cross-reference your Briggs filter.
