What should be done when a motor vehicle starts to skid?

The best way to get your car out of a skid is to just go with it. Don't try to turn or regain control it'll only make it worse.

These steps will work on any surface.

step1 At the first sign that your rear tires have broken free and are providing no traction, take your foot off of the accelerator. This will automatically reduce your speed and often times will be all you need to do to regain control of your vehicle.

Step2 Without over-reacting, slowly turn the steering wheel in the direction that the rear end is moving. For instance, if the rear end of the car is fishtailing to the left, steer to the left.

Step3 Try not to overcompensate with steering. If the car's rear end begins to fishtail to the other side, slowly steer in that direction.

Step4 It is common for the rear end to fishtail to the left and right multiple times. Stay calm and continue to steer in the direction of the rear end until the car's path straightens out.

Step5 If necessary, stop the vehicle after it has righted itself and collect your thoughts. If you suspect that your vehicle has hit something, put the vehicle in Park, turn off the engine and inspect the vehicle for damage.

One thing you DONT want to do is lock up your brakes....its a great idea to slow down, however if you apply the brakes to hard and lock up the wheels your car will just slide in a straight line. As always, drive slow during winter to prevent losing control.

There are two types of slide. Under steer and over steer.

When a car under steers (most common on front wheel cars) the car will overshoot its intended path of travel due to a loss of front wheel traction. To recover this slide you must turn the wheel to follow the path of travel (direction the car is sliding, the car cant stop if the wheels are sliding instead of rolling) and regain grip through modulated breaking (varying pressure on the break to allow the tires to begin tracking again, allowing you to steer and slow the car).

When a car over steers (the back end slides out) most commonly due to excessive throttle on a rear wheel drive car or through application of the handbrake while in a corner (not recommended nor legal on public roads). to arrest the slide and return to a normal path of travel the wheel must be turned the same directionas the slide. Then slowly rotate back to straight and the rear tires will follow. (Note: the intent of turning the direction of the slide is to regain grip with the front tires then use that grip to return the car to its intended path.)
