The modern T/F engine is a very loose interpretation of a Chrysler engine that came out in 1951. The legendary Hemi. The first recognized "racing" derivation was the Donovan 417 of the later 60s. It was siimply an aluminum casting of a Chrysler block.
Over the next 40+ years they evolved into the modern marvels of today. Most are Mondello blocks.
The first T/F National race was won by a flat head Ford driven by Calvin Rice in
Great Bend, Kansas in 1955. He ran a sub ten second run. They tried all types, Olds, Pontiacs, Small & Big Block Chevys, but finally settled on the hemi. Its the most detonation resistant combustion chamber design. A surface area to volume thing.
