Lake Rotorua was discovered by Ihenga, one of the greatest of Maori adventurers. The name means literally, one of two, as he also discovered lake Rotoiti, which lies close to it. Its full name is Rotorua-nui-a-kahu (The Second Great Lake of Kahu), named after his father in law.
As far as fishing goes, there are 11 excellent lakes in very close proximity, along with many streams and tributaries which feature both rainbow and brown trouts and these can be of a great size, much of this attributed to the excellent hatchery programme in nearby Ngongotaha.
The trout in Rotoiti, Okataina, Tarawera lakes are regarded as some of the best in the world, given the crystal clear waters in which they live and the proliferation of the big trout.
