The saying "A swarm in May is worth a load of hay" suggests that capturing a bee swarm in May is particularly valuable, as this time of year is optimal for bee productivity and honey production. Bees are more active in spring, making it easier to establish a strong colony that can yield significant returns. This proverb highlights the importance of timing in beekeeping and agriculture, emphasizing that early opportunities can lead to fruitful rewards.

Until yesterday (April 18th) I've had said NO. After all, the old rhyme says, 'A swarm of bees in May, is worth a load of hay', and nothing rhymes with April!! However, yesterday our Carniolan queen swarmed with a few thousand bees here in central France. Caught us really by surprise. Normally bees only swarm when the brood nest is crowded and there's plenty of honey. There were lots of bees left in the hive but only three combs of honey, so perhaps they are expecting a good summer. It's interesting that after a warm sunny day yesterday, today is wet and cool. Somehow the bees know that the weather is about to change so often swarm just before it breaks.

The bale of hay is a hefty load.
Orchard hay is usually just a grass hay, so it may be your local hay. There are similar types of grass hay, (timothy, rye) and sometimes you can find them mixed with other types of hay. This kind of hay is good but for most horses they may need alfalfa or oat hay in addition to orchard. 'Easy keepers' do well with orchard hay because they maintain their body weight more easily.

Yes, hay can float in water due to its low density and air pockets. However, the exact behavior may depend on the type of hay and how tightly it is packed.
