Chapter 14

It is too dark for the Tuck's to try and find the horse thief, so they decide to wait until the next day. They talk about what has happened, and Angus Tuck feels very concerned. Winnie cannot get off to sleep and longs to be back in her own bed. She feels a little better when she thinks that the man in the yellow suit will have told her parents what he had seen on the road. But the Tuck's are so kind to her that she begins to feel more comfortable again. Then Jesse comes to her bedside and says that she could wait 6 or 7 years until she is the same as him, then go and drink the water. They would then be the same age together forever and could get married. She adores him and when he has gone she thinks about what he has said. But she just feels confused. She doesn't know what to think any more.
