The Siege of Port Hudson was between the Union and the Confederates. The Confederates were under Major General Franklin Gardner, and the Union was under control of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks. The Union ended up winning, since the Confederates surrender after finding out that Vicksburg surrendered. Gardner realized there was no hope for the situation and that there was no benefit of continuing to protect Port Hudson.
