Although the only person who knows for sure whether L and Light were "friends" would be Obha, but it seems reasonable to assume that they shared a unique, like/hate friendship. At least, it was probably the closest thing to a friendship they could experience, considering how emotionally detached they were. Had Light not used Death Note, I believe that they could have been friends in the conventional sense.
They both are incredibly clever, accomplished, shared a GENUINE affection/attachment with a SELECTED FEW people (L had Watari, and sort of Light and Misa; Light had his family) and are HUGE liars (I strongly believe L was a compulsive liar). Given that they share such major characteristics, it's not surprising that they would identify with each other.
Another interesting thing I noticed was that the only times in the series where both L and Light showed their childish sides was when they fought with each other. L didn't even do this with Watari, and the same goes with Light and his family.
Finally, although Light's obsession with becoming God obscured his sense of compassion, L seemed to think of Light as a friend. If my memory serves correctly, L mentioned once that he hoped he was wrong about Light being Kira (REMEMBER: L STATED THAT HE HATES TO LOOSE/BE WRONG, WHICH DOESN'T APPEAR TO BE ANOTHER LIE CONSIDERING THE LENGTHS HE GOES TO SOLVE THE KIRA CASE).
