The brothers Moe , Shemp and Curly Howard , Larry Fine , Joe Besser , [Joe Palma doubled for Shemp after his death] and Joe DeRita . (Emil Sitka was selected to replace Larry who had a stroke but this did not come about.)
Generically they were Larry, Curly and Moe. But in reality there were a total of SIX stooges that filled the roles. Originally Larry and Moe Fine, and Shemp Howard. Shemp was replaced with Jerry "Curly" Fine, and later by "Joe" Besser. The last stooge was Joe Derita as "Curly Joe".
Moe and Larry were always the first and second stooges. At different times the third stooge was Curly, or Shemp, or Joe, or Curly Joe.
The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comedy act of the early to mid-20th century best known for their numerous short subject films. Their hallmark was physical slapstick comedy punctuated by quickly-delivered one-liners, within outrageous storylines. The basic premise for all their work was that they would take any job they could get no matter how little they were qualified for it. See the link below for a detailed biography of the Three Stooges and the characters who made up the act.
Curly and Moe are 2 of the 3 Stooges. The other is Larry. The odd thing is that Curly has a buzz cut and Larry has curly hair.
