Tony Hawk said (via Twitter) that he was offered $175k to appear on the show on 30 April 2009.
For the third season of "Dancing with the Stars," participants were offered contracts that had variable pay rates, depending upon how long they lasted, for a maximum of $245,000. That's compared to the $125,000 or so that John O'Hurley and Kelly Monaco received for their appearances on the first season.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (see Related Links below), celebrities get $125,000 just for joining the show, rehearsing on a tight schedule for three weeks, and competing in the first two episodes.
For Weeks 3 and 4, the pay per episode is $10,000. If the celebrity survives elimination, the pay is $20,000 per episode for Weeks 5 & 6 and $30,000 for Weeks 7 & 8. In Weeks 9 & 10, the final two weeks of the show, the pay per episode is $50,000.
The most a celebrity can earn, provided they make it to the final, is $345,000. There is no cash prize for winning.

The shows producers select and invite celebrities to be on the show. They typically look for people with different backgrounds and different types of celebrity. In a 2014 interview, producer Ron Wade stated - "A right mix of celebrities is essential to the success of the show."
