Ground Zero at Trinity Site on White Sands Missle Range was instantly turned to green colored glass when the world's first atomic bomb was exploded on July 16, 1945. The intense heat fused the desert sand surrounding the blast area into glass. The area is now mostly buried and is closed to visitors except on one day per year when tours are allowed.
