When Hero is publicly traduced by Don Pedro and Claudio, her friends and relatives react differently. Beatrice helps conspire to fake Hero's death, so she will not have to live with the shame. She also encourages Benedick to "Kill Claudio" and he accordingly challenges him to a duel. Leonato challenges Don Pedro.
Once Claudio and Don Pedro are faced with the evidence that they have wrongfully accused Hero, Leonato forgives him but charges him with a penance. He also asks Claudio to marry his "niece" but, with the connivance of Beatrice and the other women, it is Hero who shows up at the altar.
Prove Hero's innocence by having her feign death. Claudio agrees to marry Leonato's "other daughter," Prince John ("the Bastard") is revealed to be behind Hero's slander, and Hero is revealed to be alive and marries Claudio. Also, Benedick and Beatrice grudgingly admit their love for each other and wed as well.

overhear a devised conversation
Don Pedro says that he will propose the marriage of Claudio and Hero to Leonato her father and get his consent. This he does. Claudio is grumpy because he has been fooled by Don John into believing that Don Pedro wanted Hero for himself.
Put words of love on paper
Leonato says to Leonato and Claudio, "I pray you both, posess the people in Messina here how innocent she died, and if your love can labour aught in sad invention, hang her an epitaph upon her tomb, and sing it to her bones. Sing it tonight."
Don Pedro and Claudio both publicly accused Hero, who is Leonato's daughter and Antonio's niece, of being loose and sleeping around. They did this in the meanest and cruellest way imaginable, right in the middle of her wedding to Claudio, after which Claudio refused to go through with the wedding.

HeroThey tease that Hero might not be Leonato's son. Leonato comes back and says that she has to be, because Benedick wasn't old enough to seduce his wife at that time. There is no true doubt about the faithfulness of Leonato's wife of the parentage of Hero. Leonato's brother Antonio says in the first scene that Don Pedro and Claudio were in the war. Beatrice asks after Benedick, who was in the war with them.
It is Mountanto. It is said when Beatrice inquires after him to the messenger. Actually, Mountanto was a word for a 'flashy swordsman' and was Beatrice's way of mocking Benedick behind his back. Therefore, Benedick's, and everyone else's, surnames are unknown.
