Yes, but you cannot leave it for long periods of time or the battery will overheat and boil acid away. Normally a fully dead battery to a full battery should take about 2 hours to charge up at 40 amps.

Quite possably, your alternator is dead, or almost dead. Dead batteries tend to recharge slightly after not being used for a day or so or overnight, so that's why you can start it in the morning. But go to the mall, turn it off for ten minutes, come back, and it won't start. That's because a running vehicle can use alot of power, especally at night. Go to an alternator repair shop and get them to test it. You can also do it yourself if you have a multimeter. Most shops will test for free, because if something is wrong there is a very good chance you will get it fixed there. So go to a couple if you can and compare, or possibly get screwed. An alternator is often very easy to replace. (2 bolts and one or two connectors) So try yourself and save a bundle! . Good luck. IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A BAD COIL.
With a running start, you can jump high enough to clear a six foot fence.
It isn't adviseable to use a battery charger to jump start a car unless the charger has a jump selection on it. Most newer models do have this function. The best thing to do, whether your charger has the jump function or not, is to take out the battery and put it on a trickle charge - usually about 2 amps, until the battery itself is fully charged.
I am looking to purchase either a 600 or 900 amp battery charger (Peak) and I can't decide which is better. It is to start a dead or dying battery on the road without a jump from another person or vehicle.
It would depend on the condition of the battery and if the battery charger has a jump start mode.

Purchase an automatic battery charger of at least 10 amps output. Voltage has nothing whatsoever to do with what you choose. It is going to be a 12 volt output charger if you use it on an automobile. You want an automatic charger that will shut itself off when the battery is fully charged so you do not have to monitor the charger yourself. You can also buy a charger that can be used as a booster to jump start a car with a dead battery if you choose. The Schumacher SC-1000A battery charger is an excellent charger that will charge auto batteries and deep cycle marine batteries. It will charge at 10, 6, or 2 amps. It is fully automatic and sells for around $45.
Use another vehicle to jump start it, or replace the battery, or charge the dead battery with a charger.
As long as both batteries are the same voltage, you can jump start with the battery. If you want to charge the battery then use a battery charger.

To charge the battery on a Citroën Xsara Picasso, you can use a battery charger or jump leads. If using a battery charger, connect the charger clamps to the battery terminals—red to positive (+) and black to negative (-)—and follow the charger's instructions. For a jump start, connect the leads to the donor vehicle's battery and then to your Xsara Picasso's battery, ensuring the same positive and negative connections. Start the donor vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to charge your battery before attempting to start your car.
