Early matches often had white phosphorous which was classified extremely toxic (roughyl 1 milligram dose per kilogram of body weight would kill 50 percent of subjects). Some also had lead oxide which is classified as slightly toxic. Modern matches usually contain small amounts of toxic chemicals if it all. It would be extremely difficult to die from chewing on matches. (You would have to chew and swallow probably thousands of matches). I'm not a doctor, I'm not saying matches can't harm you. (Check out potassium chlorate, red phosphorous, sulfur, and potassium sequisulfide if your interested in modern match dangers)
