The Outsiders

In the movie the Outsiders directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Ponyboy and Jonny run away from there broken down life back home to the safety of the old church. The Broken-down church is an important place in the Outsiders because it brings out Pony-boys and Jonny's true colours, and they are not judged as Greasers but as kids.

The rural surroundings of the church are where Pony-boy and Jonny escape from sorrow and misfortune. In the outsiders symbolisation is a big Visual Technique used, like the golden hue that is always in the background, this symbolises that Pony-boy and Jonny are seeing the gold side of life that they are gold. They act like they are greasers but on the inside they are admirable, good people.

The shining, glowing appearance of the church is a delightful place where Pony-boy and Jonny are running around having a fun pleasant time. They are catching animals in the yard and even though they are brave they are scared of 'the monster' outside. The lighting in the abandoned church gives us a different perspective of Pony-boy and Jonny. Back at home the lighting is always dark and there is no hope, but at the church it gives Pony-boy and Jonny a vibe of life, they can do what they want to do and just be what they are kids who just want to live life and have fun.

We have learnt that Pony-boy and Jonny do have a golden side to life, and the church brings out there inner self's. They don't have to be known as a greaser, hypothetically they are but they are just good kids that unfortunately, got caught at the wrong place at the wrong time.
