Can you use an electronic cigarette at the airport?

In short, yes. There is no legal reason why you cannot use electronic cigarettes in an airport as they do not contain tobacco or produce harmful second-hand smoke. However, you may be approached if your electronic cigarette looks like a traditional cigarette (ie white with orange light at the end) because people may think it is a real cigarette. Some airlines have banned electronic cigarettes from their planes because it is the easiest thing to do. They do not know enough about electronic cigarettes to make a judgement about whether they are considered safe yet, so the easy option is to protect themselves by banning them.

Yes. Per FAA Regulations, electronic cigarettes are permitted in checked luggage.

The Associated Press, however, received a letter from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in February of 2011 signaling that the use of electronic cigarettes on airplanes soon be banned. Reports are that the FAA will take up the reinterpretation of its existing cigarette regulations in the spring of 2011.

I just checked with United Airlines and they said there is no electronic cigarettes allowed on the plain. However, the flight is from Newark New Jersey to Israel. That could be why. It is possible to take one on other flights within the U.S.

Electronic cigarettes can be used anywhere, where "normal" cigarettes were banned. You can use them in the airport and even on the plane as they pose no threat to anyone.


However, I'm sure the FAA will come up with some excuse to ban them as they do not like people enjoying themselves.

Did you know that since smoking was banned on most airline travels, the airlines have increased their revenue at the plight of passengers, as they now do not have to refresh the air inside of the cabin as much, and thus, we all breath dirty air on airline flights.


Per TSA Rules you cannot use an electronic cigarettes on a public airplane in the USA. Most airports allow the use of the E-Cigs, but some have banned their use. Some ignorant businesses, and some militant anti-smoking types, have banned their use.

According to the Official TSA Blog, You can travel on a plane with your electronic cigarette, but just like tobacco cigarettes, you may not use your electronic cigarette aboard any US commercial airliner, whether on the tarmac or during the flight. Airline companies may have their own regulations regarding how you may travel with your e-cig; some may not allow you to stow it in your checked luggage. It is always best to refer to the list prohibited items which is specific to the airline with which you're flying. Charter flights operate under a different set of rules than commercial airlines and may allow the use of e-cigarettes.

I have traveled with my eCig in my carry on and they haven't say anything yet, so, my guess is of course they will allow you to travel with it on your checked baggage.
