Distance and displacement are both products of alienation and identity creation. Distance is the cultural difference between two individuals, where the relationship assumes ownership of one's own culture to compare to the other's. Displacement is in relation to the individual's identity within the culture, where she does not feel she owns neither the prevailing culture nor the alternative's.

Distance is the number registered on your car's odometer. Every time the car moves,
the number grows, even if the car is going around in circles.

Displacement is the vector constructed by drawing a line between your starting
point and your ending point, regardless of what route you followed to get there.

If you drive your car exactly one lap around a 2-mile track and wind up back at the
starting line, your distance was 2 miles, your displacement is zero.

Imagine this path, from A to B, from B to C.

From A to C is the displacement (initial and final positions), this is also the distance from A to C.
