Battleships will most likely be resigned to museums and history due to the fact that in the past they were used to bombard coasts and attack other ships. Even with improved targeting systems and better missile defense, battleships are still less efficient and more expensive at their jobs than cruise missiles and other methods. This fact is compounded by the fact that even with advanced defense systems, they are still a huge target. Take the attack on the USS Cole for instance: They are a target which is stationary. A smaller, faster-moving ship could easily cause enough damage to put the larger one out of service. I believe that the appearance and subsequent perfection of the missile has effectively put the battleship out of a job.
