Donkey and horses are related but not the same species. Horses bred to horses produce horses, donkeys bred to donkeys produce donkeys. You may be thinking of a mule, which is a hybrid cross between the donkey and mule.

Horses, donkeys, asses and zebra all belong to the equine family. They are related species but have a different number of chromosomes to each other so while they can breed with each other the resulting progeny is usually sterile (cannot breed)

Yes a donkey will mate with a horse, this is how mules and hinnies are produced.
A Jack (male donkey) bred with a mare ( female horse) will produce a mule.

A stallion (male horse) bred with a Jennet (female donkey) will produce a hinny.

In the wild a donkey would not naturally breed with a horse. The production a mule (the mating of a male/Jack donkey and a female/mare horse) or the production of a hinny (the mating of a male/stallion horse and a female/jenny donkey) is done under controlled conditions and generally requires some training of the male to get him used to breeding females that are not members of his species. Females are usually heavily restrained or the use of artificial insemination is used.
