The answer above is false..Most people think he died in the death ball but instead he was brought back in time to the planet where they got the healing liquid. There he battled someone he thought was frieza but was actually his ancestor. Angered by the loss of his comrades and his incapability to do anything when frieza so called destroyed planet vegeta and him, he turned into a super saiyan.He then defeated the ancestor known as chilled(I don't know why all there names resemble something cold) the planet plant(race that invented the healing liquid)

told everyone about the legend of the super saiyan which is why on planet vegeta he said. "one hasn't appeared in over 1000 years" that's because it happened back in time.There was never any record of him dying despite most thinking he did.

Goku would probably never become as powerful as he did and never have Vegeta on his side for later fights,(Androids,Majin Buu etc.) trunks would never have anyone to look up to,(let alone EXIST; remember,Vegeta joined the Z team and THEN met Bulma) Yamcha would have a kid with Bulma before he died against the androids,Goten probably never would have been born because Goku would die because of the heart condition, and Piccolo,Tien,Chaoitzu,Gohan,and Yamcha would all perish against the androids.
