Captain Smith was chosen to be the captain of the Titanic for several reason:
He was a favoured captain for some of the richer people who travelled with White Star line because of his experience at sea.
He had experience captaining ships of Titanic's size and was White Star Lines most senior captain. He had been the captain on Titanic's sister ship Olympic.
It was also to be his last voyage before retiring and it was decided that this should be his last voyage. He was 62 when he captained Titanic so there is a possibility that he was past his best when he captained Titanic.
