Sir Cosmo gave each of the able seamen who shared his lifeboat £5 each to compensate them for the loss of their kit (£5 then was worth nearer £75 today). Some speculation has arisen that this was intended as a bribe to avoid the lifeboat going back to the wreck site to pick up more survivors, but although Lady Duff Gordon pleaded for the boat not to go back, there is no evidence that her husband intended to bribe the sailors.
