On Wednesday 3 April 1912, Titanic arrived in Southampton before it was moored up in anticipation for the departure to Cherbourg. During this time a fire broke out in one of No. 6 boiler room's bunkers. This was kept under control but not fully extinguished until after the ship departed from Southampton on its maiden voyage.

This was a common occurrence in shipping in this era, coal dust can cause fires if not properly ventilated, and although Titanic had more than adequate ventilation it was still a likelihood all the same.
