Capt. Smith did not live to explain his actions but a timeline of his presence shows that he was very proactive in aiding passengers and he was doubtless doing just that until his last moments, not being apathetic as portrayed in James Cameron's epic movie.

There is no reason why a captain should perish with his ship, many are saved. Indeed there are reports that Captain Smith was seen in the water after the Titanic sank, but the temperature was such that survival of anyone in the water was limited to seconds. Additionally there was never enough room in the lifeboats, and if every boat was full to bursting at least 1000 people would still have drowned. There are stories that Smith may have felt responsible in some way for the disaster and honour dictated his fate, but this was to be his last voyage before retirement, so why perish needlessly? It is all speculation, but the fact remains that there was no room in the boats.
There are many sensational stories but noone is exactly sure how Capt. Smith died on Titanic.
