Television programs like Law and Order and CSItake considerable liberties with police procedure to move the story along and bring the plot to an end within the allotted hour. Among the differences between real life and what you see on TV are:

  1. Detectives rarely work one case at a time. Most detectives will have many active cases at any one time, in various stages of investigation.
  2. Few cases are solved in a day or two. Forensic tests can require months before results are obtained. Suspects and witnesses can be elusive and are not always located immediately. When they are located, they may not be willing to discuss the case. Unless there is an arrest warrant or probable cause for an arrest, detectives can't take someone "downtown" unless they agree to go.
  3. Federal agencies like the FBI rarely take charge of cases initiated by local police. When federal agencies get involved, it is usually to assist, and the assistance is welcomed. Federal agencies usually have more money and other resources to bring to an investigation.
  4. Detectives do not form social relationships with victims or witnesses in cases. An officer who did this would be viewed as having very poor judgment.
  5. A case may not go to trial for months or even years after the crime has taken place. If a prosecutor is involved with a case in an advisory capacity, that doesn't mean the same prosecutor will handle the case at trial.
  6. At NYPD and in other large agencies, the rank of "detective" is often permanent or semi-permanent. In smaller organizations, being a detective is often a temporary assignment lasting from one to four years. When the assignment term is up, the former detective returns to uniformed patrol.

What is the disclaimer at the beginning of each Law and Order episode?

Do you mean, the print on the screen that reads, "The following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event," or, "Although inspired in part by a true incident, the following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event?"Or do you mean the voice-over introduction? If that's what you mean, then:For regular Law & Order, it is: "In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups, the police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories."For Law & Order SVU, it is: "In the criminal justice system, sexually-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories."For Law & Order CI, it is: "In New York City's war on crime, the worst criminal offenders are pursued by the detectives of the Major Case Squad. These are their stories."And for Law & Order: Trial By Jury, it is: "In the criminal justice system, all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty, either through plea bargain, confession, or trial by jury. This is one of those trials."

Change Your Life with a Criminal Justice Program?

If you have an interest in supporting law enforcement, solving crimes, ensuring the public safety and helping others, you may be interested in obtaining a degree in criminal justice from a college or university. Many colleges and universities offer criminal justice programs, and graduates from these programs often go on to work in a variety of police departments, federal protection agencies and social service offices in and around their communities. Most criminal justice programs at a college or university function like other degree programs, allowing students to learn the basics upon undertaking their studies. Most criminal justice programs will have a heavy focus on the history of the criminal justice system, how offenders are currently treated and what the future of the system holds. Students may be asked to participate in classes that require them to apply critical thinking skills to solve ethical problems in society, as they may face such dilemmas in the real world. Additionally, many criminal justice programs will offer students the opportunity to intern with actual organizations and agencies that handle criminal justice matters on a regular basis. While many traditional colleges and universities offer criminal justice degree programs, those seeking a degree in criminal justice may also want to investigate online programs. Criminal justice online degree programs are a great way for students to earn their degree on their own terms, as many online schools offer flexible schedules. Seeking a criminal justice degree online may also allow students to study at their own pace, which is great for non-traditional students, such as working professionals and parents. Finally, students seeking a criminal justice degree online may be afforded a greater amount of access to their professors, as class sizes in online programs are generally smaller than at traditional establishments. Students taking online criminal justice classes are also typically afforded the ability to contact their professor directly, and many online criminal justice classes will be held using web cams and streaming video and audio, meaning students may have the chance to ask live questions in class, just as if they were attending a brick-and-mortar establishment.

Is criminal justice the same as csi?

Criminal Justice is a broad field, which encompasses the police (law-enforcement), the district attorney (state attorney, solicitor), the detention center (jail, juvenile detention center), the court system, probation and parole services, and the state or federal departments of corrections (federal or state prisons). Within the police department are crime scene investigators, or CSI's. They are detectives and technicians who process and investigate crime scenes. Unlike the CSI: series on TV, the detectives are not really involved in solving the crimes. They uncover clues and evidence, which are generally turned over to the actual detectives who are investigating the case (such as homicide, robbery, etc.). So to answer your question: yes, they are related. CSI's are members of the criminal justice system by virtue of the fact that they are law-enforcement officers (some are not: they're only technicians).
