Television programs like Law and Order and CSItake considerable liberties with police procedure to move the story along and bring the plot to an end within the allotted hour. Among the differences between real life and what you see on TV are:
- Detectives rarely work one case at a time. Most detectives will have many active cases at any one time, in various stages of investigation.

- Detectives do not form social relationships with victims or witnesses in cases. An officer who did this would be viewed as having very poor judgment.
- A case may not go to trial for months or even years after the crime has taken place. If a prosecutor is involved with a case in an advisory capacity, that doesn't mean the same prosecutor will handle the case at trial.
- At NYPD and in other large agencies, the rank of "detective" is often permanent or semi-permanent. In smaller organizations, being a detective is often a temporary assignment lasting from one to four years. When the assignment term is up, the former detective returns to uniformed patrol.
