I believe that he purpose in the second book, when they aretogether again in Bella's bedroom. In the end. It was a very - um, what can i say - original proposal. He said that she should marry him, before he could turn her into a vampire. In that way they agreed, that Bella wasn't going to be a vampire before graduating.

Bella asks him to kiss her then. I say that is forcefully because he tricked Bella into doing it.(p.525-529 of Eclipse)
