Daryl never existed in the comics, nor Merle. They were created for the show, so there is nothing to base it off of. It is important to note, that most of the character deaths that they have showed in the series of the show have either been drastically different, made up, or altered. The more important and relevant question then would be, will Daryl die in the series. I find it kind of unlikely, but you never know. I think they realize that Daryl is an important member of the show and one of the main reasons why people watch it, but the show as with the novels, shows that any character no matter how beloved can die at any time. We'll have to see.
