It's not a county law it's a state law . And state law says that you are still a minor at 17 . And still your parents responsibility until you turn 18 . Now state law does say that you can be imancipated . IF you can show a judge a good reason why , and show a judge that you can take care of your own affairs . Your parents have to give their permission on this though . If you are imancipated that means you can sign legal and binding agreements ... Rental agreements , loan agreements ...and so on . BUT it also means you can be sued.............. if you do not follow through with these agreements . Once you are imancipated........ you can not count on your parent sto get you out of trouble !!!!!! It goes on your credit record . Now at 17 you are considered an adult as far as any criminal activities go . You are still your parents responsibility , but you will take the punishment as if you were an adult . Your parents will pay the fines YOU will do the time ! Local laws as far as police or sherriffs depts. just have different ways of handling these types of situations . Some won't even touch "civil " arguements . They will say take it to court . Like the town I live in I wouldn't be able to report my daughter as a runaway if she's 17 and in a safe place and going to school . But if I go down the road to my old hometown . They have a runaway law there . Like I said it's a state law .... not a county per county law . As far as your parents are concerned if they choose not to bring you home . You may can make it till your 18 . But if your parents say to come home . And have the money for attorneys in a civil case . They make force you to come back home . I have a 17 year old daughter who has been out on her own for 5 months now . she is not very cooperative in my home . And chooses not to follow rules . She will not listen to reason or advice from those of us who have been there and done that . She has finished school 5 months ahead of time . And I am proud of her early accomplishments . But she still does not have a car or a full time job to take care of herself . She wants to be out on her own and be an adult .............................. BUT she still calls me to buy her groceries . That doesn't sound like she can handle her own affiars does it ? She wants out on her own . But she doesn't want to spend her money the right way . I have recently told her that I will NOT be buying her anymore groceries for her and her boyfriend . It hurts me to do this . But she will have to learn the hard way . Of how to take care of herself . She cannot have it both ways . Now if you are still 17 and have a nice atmosphere to live in stay there ! Life is too hard for a young person these days . Unlike parents the electric co. , gas co. , water co, rent , and credit card co's. will NOT wait or listen to any whining and complaining of why the bills are not paid . They will simply cut what ever it is that you are late on OFF ! Parents may give you more chances than these co's. do . I was a young Mom at 17 .... I know what I am talking about . It sucks to have to heat your water up in and electric skillet to give your baby a warm bath !!!!!!!!!!!! And it sucks to have to take a cold bath to get ready to go somewhere ..... I've been there and done that . I've learned my lesson . I hope you and others that are young and read this . Really think about the consequences before you turn your back on your family ......
