He does, in fact, die in the anime. While leading the Japanese police on a wild goose chase to give Mello time to escape with Takeda, he is stopped by Takeda's pro-Kira bodyguards. He exits his car and attempts to surrender. The bodyguards then shoot him multiple times and manages to take a final drag off his cigarette before he dies.

∙ 11y agoMatt dies after assisting Mello kidnap Kiyomi Takada. He is chased by her bodyguards in a high speed car chase whilst Mello leads Takada elsewhere, and is shot down by the bodyguards and police when asked to step out of the car he was driving. He uses his last breath to smoke his cigarrete.

∙ 13y agoActually Matt died first. In the manga and the anime, Matt was killed by some Kira worshippers while Mello was kidnapping Takada. Later on before Mello was killed by Takada, He stated that he is sorry for causing Matt to lose his life.
