I don't know what you may have been told, but New Zealand is not a single person, it is a country.

Collectively, the citizens of New Zealand have the luxurious freedom of belief and of religion.

Which means that some New Zealanders do, some don't. I expect that the ratio would be similar to any other similarly 'developed' country.
