It Actually is the windiest city in New Zealand but not all the time. The main reason is because of the mountains and hills, for example Christchurch is very flat so not as much wind but as for Wellington there are hills all over the place causing lot's of wind. Sort of like how people who live in Wellington always want a house flat on the ground, but people who live in Christchurch always want a house on a hill.

Wellington, NZ, lies alongside Cook Strait which separates the two main islands of New Zealand. On both shores of the strait, the mountains reach considerable height within modest distances. Consequently the wind funnel is large.

one of the exciting things to do is to be in an airplane landing when the wind is gusting 120+ km/h. Naturally, small planes cannot land at these windspeeds.

No. If you wished to quantify this information, you should search for 'total wind run' as well as 'maximum speed', and 'number of windy days'.
