Itachi was sent on a mission by Konoha to kill the Uchihas because they started to plan against the village. The used the smart, talented, peace-loving Itachi as a spy inside the Uchiha clan. When it came time to kill every one he could not kill Sasuke, even though he was supposed to, because he was his little brother. Itachi made sure no one told Sasuke about the mission so he could live being proud of his clan. He wanted to die by the hands of Sasuke so his little brother could be regarded as a hero. Thinking back, Sasuke remembers that, on the night of the massacre, when he ran after Itachi, he saw him crying. But by the time Sasuke finds all this out, he had already killed Itachi. That's why he couldn't kill him with the rest of the clan, why he asked the third to allow Sasuke to continue living in Konoha after the massacre, and why he threatened Danzo's life if he ever tried to hurt Sasuke. And, even when he was reaching his limits because of his illness and his fight with Sasuke, he went so far as to rid Sasuke from Orochimaru, as to implant his Sharingan Jutsu's into Sasuke's eye for protection and power against Madara and even willed himself to tap Sasuke on the forehead, a trait he used to symbolized that he did care for Sasuke even though he couldn't always be there for him.

Yes, Itachi always loved Sasuke in a brotherly way and often showed it when they were younger. When Itachi was forced to massacre the Uchiha clan, he even saved his brothers life. The whole revenge thing was so that Sasuke would be the one to kill him in the future and get the glory and the techniques to be able to kill Madara. So in a way, everything he did, he was thinking of Sasuke.

Yeah as Sasuke kills him too. They have an endless bond but why Itachi hurt him like the episode where he broke Sasuke's wrist I dont know. Itachi loved Sasuke when he died. In the episode before Itachi died, he walked up to Sasuke and tapped his forehead with two fingers like he did when they were younger. But then he slumped over dead. Its... a really... sad episode.
