The company can put a "hold" on a certain amount of the money in your account. This is commonly done by hotels, etc., because nobody knows until you check out how much your bill will be. Vendors sometimes put a hold on your card when "cross shipping" a replacement for a defective part. They don't need to retain your card to do this. If they want physical possession of your card, run, don't walk, to a competitor.

A cash card is normally referred to as a prepaid card. They are reloadable and you have to put money on them before you can use them.
Yes just put money in the account it is linked to
With a debit card you can only use money that you put in a bank and with a credit card you are using the money from the credit card company which can lead to bankruptcy if you are not careful.
A credit card is when you are loaned money by the card company and are able to use it before hand; after which you have to pay them back. A debit card on the other hand is a card with your money on it and you use it as you wish but once the card has no money left, you have to put more money on it before you can use it again.
A debit card removes money from your account the moment you use it. A credit card is a promise by you to pay the bill when it comes in the mail. Simply put: Debit Card - pay now. Credit card - pay later.
No they do not! Used my card thus morning with no problem but tonight at same station they refused the debit card. Stating that they are "per-pay only". I pointed out that it's a "debit card" which is a point of sale transaction that is the same as cash. The manager said they would put a $50 hold on my account & if I didn't fill up to that amount they would release the hold in a few days. I told her to keep her gas & that I will be making my purchase from the station across the street at the same price without their hassle.
