As with the subways, there are a motorman and conductor as operating crew. the Conductor is in charge- and of the passengers, opening and closing doors, etc, but the motorman operates the train controls- throttle and brakes, etc. I have not reason to think that monorails would operate otherwise- there are, of c ourse central monitoring stations called Signal Towers, manned by Dispatchers, or Traffic control men. a central outside operating thing is more akin to some forms of Cable cars- at amusement parks and ski lifts- orignally called Swiss Sky Ride ( or Ski Ride) these were introduced into the United States at the World"s Fair in l964-65 and immediatley caught on!
Some subway systems systems were designed to operate in a fully automated manner with commands from a centralized computer system (e.g. BART in CA and the D. C. Metro). However law still requires them to be manned by the motorman/operator, even though much of the normal operation is done hands off by the computer.
And YES, I remember the years it took and the money wasted on problems with computers and software on the BART system, during which trains all had to be operated manually. At least now it runs automatically most of the time. About the only thing BART operators have to do now is stand there holding the deadman switch, to prove to the train and central computer that the operator is on board and at his post.
The same thing could of course be done with monorails.
