It is not possible to issue warnings about earthquakes at present as they cannot be predicted with current knowledge. It is hoped that in the future, warnings will be able to be issued for some types of earthquakes that have foreshocks (smaller earthquakes that happen before the major quake). There is no mention of foreshocks for the Gisborne 2007 quake on the Geonet website. There were aftershocks. See the related links.
Henry Hudson was an English explorer employed by the Dutch East India Company during his famous voyages in the early 17th century. He sought a northwest passage to Asia, exploring parts of what is now Canada and the northeastern United States, including the Hudson River and Hudson Bay. Hudson’s expeditions significantly contributed to European knowledge of North America's geography and laid the groundwork for future exploration and colonization.
Henry Hudson is not considered a failure primarily due to his significant contributions to exploration, despite his tragic end. His voyages led to the discovery of important waterways, such as the Hudson River and Hudson Bay, which opened up new territories for trade and settlement. Additionally, his efforts laid the groundwork for future exploration and the establishment of Dutch and British claims in North America. Ultimately, Hudson's legacy is one of exploration and discovery, rather than failure.

Work has primarily been on improving warnings. Better warnings will mean people will be better able to get to a safe place. This will result in fewer people being hurt or killed.
