He sailed from England south to Africa, west to South America, through the Straits of Magellan, north along the South American and Central American, west to the Phillipines, west and south across the Indian Ocean, and back north to England

He never returned to his country. He was commander of the first European expedition to sail all the way around the world. He was Portugese himself, but sailed in the service of the King of Spain. Sailing west from Spain, he made it around the south end of South America, discovering the Straits of Magellan which are named after him, and sailed from there across the Pacific. But he died in a battle in the Philippines. His men never recovered his body, so they never returned it to his home.
Magellan stopped first at Argentina then sailed down the coast of South America to the southernmost part of the continent, Tierra Del Fuego.
Ferdinand Magellan never explored North Carolina. He sailed around South America and then to Guam and the Philippines.
