If last year the tree was twice as tall as it was at the end of the first year, you can conclude that 4x + 4= 2(1x + 4).

You can conclude this because last year, (4 years) times the amount the tree grew (x) plus the amount the tree had already grown (4ft) will equal twice of year one. Year one is equal to 1x + 4 because one year was the time that had passed and the tree had already grown 4 ft.
