March 6, 1948] based his play 'Wicked' on the previous book 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. Maguire in turn took some of his characters from The Wizard of Oz, which was published in 1900, and made into a beloved film in 1939.
