The prison facilities of Alcatraz were damaged by Native Americans, who took over the facility for a time between 1969 and 1971. Additionally, the planting of non-native species on the island has resulted in changes to the flora. Ecological reclamation efforts are ongoing, and a lot of gum trees were cut down and removed.

The people in uniform you are referring to on Alcatraz are Park Rangers, as Alcatraz is now a part of the US Park system (hence tourism). Hope that helps.

Technically, Alcatraz is an island. The structure referred to, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, was a federal prison. The prison has long since been decommissioned as impractical due to the cost of upkeep. Alcatraz Island is now a national park, and the prison is a museum. It is open to the public and guided tours are offered of the island and facilities.
