Turner had neither the time nor the power to accomplish anything as prime minister. When he was elected leader of the Liberal party he was neither an MP nor a Senator; he asked the governor-general of the time to dissolve parliament only nine days later. In that time about all he did was to make a number of choice appointments.

John Napier Turner became the 17th Prime Minister of Canada on 1984 June 30 after Pierre Trudeau resigned. The circumstances of Trudeau's resignation along with Turner's agreement to patronage appointments led to Turner's loss in the following election. Turner was Prime Minister until September 17th, a mere 79 days.

Turner was first elected as an MP in 1968, as a representative for Ottawa - Carleton.

John Turner was never elected as Prime Minister but took power as Prime Minister following Pierre Trudeau's resignation. However, his political appointments led to a crushing defeat in the 1989 election, and Turner became the Leader of Opposition instead.
