Ponyboy initially struggles to understand Sodapop's perspective on Darry, feeling frustrated and misunderstood. He feels that Darry is too hard on him and doesn't seem to care, but Sodapop explains that Darry actually cares deeply and is trying to protect him. This conversation helps Ponyboy gain a new insight into Darry's actions and intentions, fostering a sense of empathy and understanding for his older brother's responsibilities. Ultimately, it deepens Ponyboy's appreciation for his family's dynamics.
When Darry and Sodapop saw Ponyboy in the hospital, they were visibly worried and relieved to see him awake. Darry, typically tough and protective, showed his emotional side, revealing the deep bond he has with Ponyboy. Sodapop, on the other hand, was more openly affectionate, expressing his love and support for Ponyboy. Their reactions highlighted the strong familial ties and concern they had for each other's well-being.
In contrast to this close loving relationship with Sodapop is Ponyboy's volatile relationship with his oldest brother, Darry. Pony and Darry are always at odds. Darry gets frustrated because Ponyboy "never thinks" and is always doing things that put the family's living arrangements at risk. Darry is the "father figure" since the death of the boy's parents. If they get into trouble the state agency will separate them. Darry is working two jobs to try to keep the family together and is hard on Ponyboy because he has to be. It isn't until the end of the novel that Ponyboy grows up enough to realize that Darry and he may not ever be close, but Darry really does love him.
