Trading posts like Fort Vancouver and other coastal trading posts enabled the Aboriginals to keep their traditional way of life and yet trade for advanced European technology. In land trade on the other hand brought explorers, traders, settlers and Canadian colonisation.
Europe wanted furs.
The first nations knew how to hunt & trap in the far North.
The Hudson Bay Company (no surprise here) set up it's first location in Canada on Hudson Bay, in the far north and shipped the pelts to Europe by sea.
So the first nations:
1. Found new wealth
2. Found a new way of life, called the European
3. Were often ill-treated or tricked by the better-educated and greedy Europeans.
4. They went on the purchase fire arms and other Western equipment that helped them gather more pelts.
5. Their expertise at living in the hostile Northern climate helped Europeans to find ways to colonize the North
6. Today, there are far more First Nation people living in southern urban areas that there are in the north. So, displacement has been a big factor, too.
There are numerous other issues, too.
