  1. Desdemona is an innocent. She has not got a drop of cynicism in her. She loves Othello completely and without reservation, even to the extent of trying to get him acquitted of murdering her.
  2. Emilia seems much older than Desdemona, although she may not actually be that much older. It is probably more of a case of the effects of living near Iago too much. She is cynical about men, and cynical about love. But despite her cynicism, she is not prepared for the horrible use to which Iago puts the handkerchief she steals. She was not aware of just how deep her husband's evil went.
  3. Bianca is a prostitute, and is very simply what she pretends to be. She is genuine without being naïve.

What is the role in the handkerchief in Othello?

It gives Othello the ocular "proof" that he's looking for from Iago ever since his jealousy is sparked. Othello gave it to Desdemona once they began seeing each other and he believes that if she ever lost it that she would no longer be devoted to him. He knocks it out of her hand during an argument, Emilia picks it up and gives it to her husband Iago. He then places it in Cassio's room and he gives it to Bianca who then throws it back at Cassio (saying that she doesn't want the trifles of another woman) while Othello is watching him (just as Iago wanted) and Othello takes this as meaning that Desdemona gave the hankerchief to Cassio, Cassio gave to Bianca, and Bianca gave it back because she didn't want a token that was given to him from another woman.

How did Othello die?

Desdemona is killed by Othello, Iago kills Emilia (his wife) as Emilia reveals that Desdemona has been falsely accused of adultery and then Othello kills himself rather than live with what he has done. In Act V, Cassio kills Roderigo after Roderigo attempts to stab Cassio (he wants Cassio dead so that he can keep Othello and Desdemona from leaving the country, and get closer to Desdemona, whom he loves from afar). Unfortunately, instead of Roderigo's sword penetrating Cassio's flesh, he finds that Cassio has armor on, and stabs Roderigo back.

Why did Desdemona produce the handkerchief?

She didn't. She couldn't. Othello asked her to but she couldn't produce it. Why? because her maid Emilia had stolen it and given it to Iago, who is Emelia's husband.

What hope does desdemona cling to in scene 4?

What does the discussion between Desdemona and emilia show about their relationship?

Othello and Desdemona are deeply in love with each other, even though they are very different. Othello has led a life of adventure; Desdemona has hardly been outside her house. Othello is middle-aged; Desdemona is in he late teens or early twenties. Othello is a foreigner who has won his place by merit; Desdemona is from an important Venetian family and has her social status by birth. Othello is dark-skinned; Desdemona is pale. Othello is also very humble, which makes him feel that he is unwarrantably lucky to have the love of a woman like Desdemona. This virtue should enhance their relationship, but it is unfortunately also the chink in Othello's armour through which Iago attacks, making Othello feel that Desdemona must also consider him unworthy of her love.
