The very basics of animation are the same on all media. The first step is to show an image. All following steps include minor changes to the previous image. When shown one after the other relatively quickly, the image can appear to be animated.

Animation is a series of many, many pictures shown in rapid sequence to simulate movement. For example, Mickey Mouse appears to be moving because a picture is drawn of each tiny movement he "makes" in the scene. Hope that helps.

Animation has changed a lot from when the first cartoon was created to now. There are several techniques you can use. The most popular now is computer animation, which goes into different computer styles. There is 3d which is actually done in 3d. My favorite 3d software is an open-source program called blender.

For computer 2d I like to use Macromedia Flash 8, however Flash 8 is not open-source (it's not free). I also really like Shapeshifter found on aniboom.com.

Then, there is classic animation, where you draw every single picture. I have tried this a few times and I do not recommend it.

Now, animation is done in frames (or sometimes called keys). It is an illusion to the eyes. The characters are not actually moving. There is one frame after another going at a certain speed to make it appear to be moving (the most common frames per second is 12 fps, or 24 fps). Full length Cartoons that you will see on television will have TONS of frames. Things like Flash 8 are for flash cartoons, which are usually much shorter.

I think they're usually made with stop frame animation. Which are individual frames which alter slightly from each other so it creates a movement when it is played somewhat rapidly after one another.

A good example of this is if you draw a stick man waving it's arm up and down.

they make lots of little pictures and then put them together and play them really fast so it flows well. like i a flip book
