Listen to the first words that Don Cheadle says in the beginning of the film.
It's the sense of touch. Any real city, you walk, you're bumped, brush past people. In L.A. ,no one touches you. We're always behind metal and glass. Think we miss that touch so much, we CRASH into each other just to feel something.
Talk about the main themes of the film; language, violence, racism, drugs, sex, cause and effect. Talk about the main characters and their background and why they are racist. And most importantly, write about the effect it had on you and why.
If you notice, nobody is happy with each other whether they are married or in a relationship or even just friends. Most likely because of the racism. so the people in crash are very crude to each other, hence their bad relationship.
Auto and other severe accidents can (Crash!_) the nervous system into amnesia- a chronic or severe memory loss- it can be argued the majority of amnesia cases are triggered by accidental crashes- vehicular for example- and other super traumatic things like War and Battle shock-they used to say Shell shock!- violent explosions and bombs may set it off too- it is first necessary to knock the victim unconscious-you don:t get this from a fender bender. My Mother, a nurse, said apart from Veterans cases- all the amnesiacs she was familiar with were accident-triggered, sometimes they never come out- are very much alive, but with mental blackouts. it is a sad and serious subject.
The movie is about racial tensions and stereotypes and how the worst of events can bring us together in the most unconventional of ways.

The Book is a lot different then the Movie. The movie and the play have scenes switched around from the novel, and the novel has different names for some of the characters. The movie also has different relationships with the characters. For instance, Madame Giry is not the caretaker of Christine Daae in the novel, but a box keeper for the Phantom. There are many differences, but both are very good. :)
